Odoo Community vs Enterprise (2026): Which Edition Should You Actually Pick?

Odoo Community is free. Odoo Enterprise costs ~₹24K per user per year. The decision is rarely about price - here’s the real framework we use with clients.

Pick Odoo Community if you’re a 1-20 person SMB, you have a partner who can self-host, and you don’t need Studio, e-signature, or Odoo.sh. Pick Enterprise if you want zero infra headache, visual customisation via Studio, and official support. Most teams over-pay for Enterprise too early - here’s how to know which side of the line you’re on.

Quick verdict by your situation

You are…Pick
Bootstrapped startup < 10 usersCommunity
SMB with an in-house dev or Odoo partnerCommunity
15-50 users, non-technical teamEnterprise (Standard plan)
Manufacturing or full ERP scopeEnterprise (needs MRP modules)
Multi-company or multi-currency at scaleEnterprise
Compliance / SLA / official support requiredEnterprise

What you actually lose with Community

The marketing pages list 50+ "missing features." In practice, only ~10 of them matter for SMBs:

  • Studio - the visual customisation tool. Without it, customisation requires Python developer time.
  • Odoo.sh - managed hosting, staging, and GitHub-based deployment. You self-host on Community.
  • E-signature module - native digital signing of quotes and contracts.
  • VOIP integration - click-to-call from inside CRM.
  • Marketing Automation - drip campaigns inside Odoo.
  • Documents - integrated document management.
  • Accounting helpers - bank synchronisation, AI-based invoice reading, follow-ups.
  • Planning - employee shift planning module.
  • Quality & Maintenance modules (manufacturing).
  • Official Odoo support SLA.

Most of these have free community add-on alternatives on the OCA repository, but they take effort to install and maintain.

When Community is genuinely enough

  • You only need core CRM, Sales, Invoicing, Inventory, Purchases, HR-light
  • You have a partner (us, or anyone) who can self-host and patch
  • You don’t need visual customisation - you’re OK editing XML and Python
  • You’re budget-conscious in Year 1 and want to validate before paying licenses

Real-world: ~6 out of 10 of our SMB clients start on Community and stay there for 12-24 months.

When you actually need Enterprise

  • Manufacturing - the MRP-2 and Quality modules are Enterprise-only and you cannot replicate them with OCA
  • You don’t have a technical partner - Odoo.sh + Studio reduces dependency on developers
  • Multi-company / multi-currency / consolidations - much smoother in Enterprise accounting
  • You’re ready to grow past 30 users - the per-user cost is justified by Studio savings
  • You need official support for compliance or SLA reasons

Can you switch Community → Enterprise later?

Yes - and we recommend doing exactly that. Start on Community, validate the workflows, then migrate to Enterprise when a specific feature becomes the bottleneck. The migration takes 1-2 days for a clean install; longer if you’ve customised heavily. Plan for one weekend of downtime and have a partner standby.
