Founder Notes
5 Years In: The Lessons We Wish We Knew Before Starting IBW
From bootstrapping in 2020 to shipping for 60+ founders globally - the unglamorous truths nobody tells you about running a digital studio.
Five years ago, our founder started Insta Biz Web with a borrowed laptop, an unpaid invoice, and the belief that small businesses deserved big-tech quality. Today we’ve shipped products for 60+ founders across 5 countries. Here’s what we wish someone had told us on day one.
The 7 lessons
- Say no to bad scope. The most expensive projects are the ones you should have walked away from in week one.
- Pricing is a positioning tool. If you’re the cheapest, you’ll attract the worst clients. Charge more, deliver more.
- Hire slow, fire faster. One wrong hire costs a quarter. Everyone who’s built a team has learnt this the hard way.
- Document everything. Decisions, contracts, retrospectives. Future-you is forgetful.
- Keep your runway honest. Cash buys you the most precious thing: the option to say no.
- Be the dumbest person in the room. Surround yourself with people sharper than you. It’s the fastest way to grow.
- Stay kind. The world is small. The internet remembers. Be the agency people recommend without being asked.
What we’re betting on next
AI agents, vertical SaaS for SMBs, and our first international office. The tools changed, the principles didn’t. We’re still here to make great tech accessible - just faster, smarter, and with better coffee.
If you’re thinking about starting your own thing, our advice: just begin. The first version will embarrass you in three years - and that’s exactly the point. Meet the team that’s lived these lessons.
